Netconcepts President Stephan Spencer has some key advice for Technorati to counteract the challenge from its new blog search engine rival: Google.

In an article for Inc magazine, he says:

“Technorati can point to different features it has that Google doesn’t, but that’s only for now. Technorati’s best bet is to try to get acquired. It needs to stop worrying about search technology and take the head start it has in creating online communities and leverage it. Bloggers come to Technorati for more than just searching. Building on that community will make Technorati more than just another search engine. Anything it can roll out that makes it harder for people to switch will make it a sweeter acquisition target.

Blogs and RSS feeds may sound like a lot of nerdy buzzwords, but President of Netconcepts Stephan Spencer wades in with his thoughts for webpronews.com, particularly when it comes to driving search engines to one's site. It's all about personalizing the content they receive he says.

So more than a lot of “nerdy” buzzwords, blogs and RSS feeds can be the means to driving search-related traffic to one’s site. Contributing to an article for webpronews.com, President of Netconcepts Stephan Spencer emphasized Yahoo’s importance to RSS.

Publishers should add their feeds to their My Yahoo page, and use a service like Pingomatic to ping Yahoo when the feed gets updated. Also, Spencer favors full-text feeds over partial-text ones: “Give me more than a few sentences. I want more so I can read it on the plane.”

When possible, publishers should let users personalize the content they can receive via feeds, and to have the option to subscribe anonymously. From the technical side, Spencer recommended using permanent 301 redirects instead of temporary 302s for RSS.
